So, how do you find a good book to READ ALOUD to your child AND for your child to read SILENTLY?
Here are some tips:
- If you are near a bookstore, GO IN ~ read books for free with your child or buy one if you can
- Use our LOCAL library ~ if they don't have the book you want, they can get it from another library ~ it is FREE
- Ask your friends ~ start a BOOK CLUB
- Buy used books ~ go to YARD SALES or shop online
- Websites ~ many online BOOK LISTS are available to help you know what to look for
The website below is AR Book Finder. As parents, you are familiar with Accelerated Reader. The books you are reading aloud to your child should be above their instructional level; this builds oral vocabulary and knowledge. The books your child reads silently should be below their instructional level; this is called pleasure level (fun and easy).
The Collections tab has three choices: Awards, State Lists (click on Georgia), and Librarians’ Picks.
- Awards: The 2012 Caldecott Medal (picture book) winner was A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka. The 2012 Newberry (chapter book) winner was Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos. There are MANY good books here!
- State Lists: The 2011-2012 Georgia Picture Storybook (K-4) winner was I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll. There are MANY good books here, as well!
- Librarian’s Picks: These are books recommended by librarians. Librarians always know about good books!
